Name: Sodium Metal Foil for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Material: Sodium Metal Foil (Na Foil)

Product Code: XN-Na-Foil

Description:

Sodium Metal Foil (Na Foil) is high-purity (> 99.7%) metallic sodium supplied as a thin, uniform foil — primarily used as the anode in sodium metal batteries and as a counter/reference electrode in sodium-ion battery research. As a result, the smooth surface and uniform thickness deliver consistent, reproducible electrochemistry across cells. Furthermore, Xnergy ships every roll under a four-protection packaging system (aluminum foil + protective film + plastic bag + aluminum-plastic bag + tin can) that enables long-term storage without compromising battery performance. Multiple reference thicknesses from 70 μm to 500 μm are stocked, with custom widths and lengths available on request.

Application:

Sodium metal foil serves as the anode material in advanced sodium-ion and sodium-metal battery research, including full-cell prototyping for stationary energy storage, grid-scale storage, and low-cost mass-market battery development. Furthermore, this foil is widely used in academic research as a counter or reference electrode in half-cell studies, in cathode performance evaluation against a known sodium source, and in fundamental studies of sodium plating/stripping interface chemistry, SEI formation on Na, and dendrite suppression strategies — the central challenges of advancing Na-metal battery technology.

Each roll is individually wrapped for ease of use. Without aluminum foil, the transparent protective film on both sides must be removed slowly and simultaneously to prevent tearing of the thin sodium foil.

Characteristics:

High purity (> 99.7%) for reproducible electrochemistry

The high-purity sodium metal minimizes oxide and chloride contaminants that would otherwise distort sodium plating/stripping behavior and SEI formation. As a result, customers receive a reliable reference electrode for half-cell studies and reproducible full-cell performance for benchmarking research.

Wide thickness range (70 μm – 500 μm)

Thicker foils (0.3 – 0.5 mm) provide ample sodium reservoir for long-term cycling experiments and battery prototyping. Thinner foils (70 – 200 μm) enable lean-Na designs essential for energy-density-optimized sodium metal cells. Therefore, customers can match the sodium loading precisely to their experimental targets.

Aluminum foil backing option for thin foils

The 0.1 mm and 0.07 mm thicknesses are supplied with aluminum foil backing — the Al foil functions both as mechanical support during handling and as the current collector in cell assembly. Consequently, ultra-thin foils that would otherwise tear during transfer become practical for advanced lean-Na research.

Four-protection packaging system

Each roll is sealed using a four-layer protection system: (1) aluminum foil support, (2) protective film on both sodium surfaces preventing oxidation, (3) plastic outer bag, (4) aluminum-plastic vacuum bag, (5) sealed tin can. Therefore, sodium metal — which reacts rapidly with both moisture and air — can be safely shipped and stored long-term without surface oxidation or performance loss.

Smooth, uniform surface for consistent battery performance

The foil is supplied with a controlled, mirror-smooth surface free of pinholes, oxide patches, or thickness variations. As a result, sodium plating proceeds uniformly during cycling, reducing dendrite nucleation and improving coulombic efficiency in research cells.

Customizable dimensions

Beyond the 9 reference dimensions listed above, custom thicknesses (within 70 – 500 μm), widths (within 100 – 120 mm), and lengths are available to match specific cell-format requirements. Furthermore, customers can specify with or without aluminum foil backing on most thicknesses.

Handling Instructions:

1. Open packaging exclusively in a glovebox under inert atmosphere (Ar or N₂, H₂O and O₂ < 1 ppm). 2. For foils without aluminum backing, remove the protective film on both sides slowly and simultaneously to prevent tearing — sodium metal is mechanically soft. 3. Cut sodium foil to required size using a clean, dry blade or punch. 4. Press lightly onto the cell substrate or current collector. 5. Avoid contact with water, alcohols, ketones, or any protic solvents — sodium reacts violently with all of these.

Packaging & Storage:

Each roll of sodium foil ships in a 4-protection packaging system: aluminum foil mechanical support, protective film on both sides preventing oxidation, plastic bag, aluminum-plastic vacuum bag, and final sealed tin can. Therefore, customers should store the unopened tin can in a cool, dry environment, protected from moisture and direct sunlight. Once the tin can is opened, store the remaining foil exclusively in a glovebox under inert atmosphere — exposure to ambient air will cause rapid surface oxidation and performance degradation.

Safety:

For research and industrial use only. Sodium metal is highly reactive — it reacts violently with water (releasing flammable hydrogen and concentrated NaOH), and ignites or oxidizes when exposed to air over time. Handle exclusively in glovebox or dry-room conditions during cell preparation. Wear full PPE including face shield, fire-resistant gloves, and lab coat. Never expose sodium foil to water, water-containing solvents (alcohols, ketones), oxidizers, or heat. In case of fire, use Class D dry powder extinguisher only — never water or CO₂. Refer to SDS for complete safety information and emergency response.
