Why SPAN

The breakout cathode of the lithium-sulfur boom

Lithium-sulfur promises 2 to 3× the energy density of lithium-ion, but elemental sulfur fights the polysulfide “shuttle.” SPAN (sulfurized polyacrylonitrile) binds sulfur into a conductive polymer, suppressing the shuttle and working with standard carbonate electrolytes. SSPN takes it further, pushing sulfur content far higher for more capacity.

SPAN is the shuttle-suppressing workhorse at ~50% sulfur. SSPN is the high-energy upgrade, combining S90D polymer sulfur with SPAN to reach >79% sulfur while keeping the shuttle in check.
