Product Introduction

Ethylene carbonate (EC) is the foundational cyclic carbonate solvent in lithium-ion battery electrolyte formulations. Its high dielectric constant allows lithium salts such as LiPF₆ to dissociate fully, producing the free Li⁺ ions that carry charge through the electrolyte. EC also plays a critical role in forming the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on graphite anodes — the protective layer that determines cycle life and first-cycle efficiency. Without EC, most graphite-based cells would suffer rapid capacity loss. It is almost always used in combination with linear co-solvents (DMC, EMC, or DEC) to reduce viscosity and improve low-temperature conductivity.
