Triethyl phosphate (TEP) is a flame-retardant phosphate ester used as a co-solvent or additive in electrolyte safety research. Its phosphoryl (P=O) functional group participates in gas-phase radical chain-breaking reactions that inhibit combustion, reducing electrolyte flammability when TEP replaces 10–30 vol% of conventional carbonate solvents. Unlike its aryl counterpart TPP, TEP is a liquid at room temperature and is fully miscible with standard carbonate electrolytes, making it practical for direct blending.
