Potassium hexafluorophosphate (KPF₆) is the primary electrolyte salt for potassium-ion battery (KIB) research, serving the same role in K-ion systems that LiPF₆ plays in Li-ion and NaPF₆ plays in Na-ion batteries. The large K⁺ radius (1.38 Å) and the favorable desolvation energy of K⁺ in propylene carbonate and other solvents give KPF₆-based electrolytes unexpectedly high ionic conductivity, making them attractive for room-temperature battery research despite the larger ion size. KPF₆ is compatible with graphite anodes — K⁺ can intercalate into graphite to form KC₈ — making graphite a practical and cost-effective anode for K-ion research cells.
